Marion Chubon

Gone Home was created as an accidental business by me, Marion Chubon, a homemaker extraordinarie. With the birth of my second son, Elliot, in 2002, my husband and I decided that I would go back to work part-time after a few months. Elliot had other plans. He refused a bottle, and with some trepidation, we decided to try to make it work on one income.

As a result of our budgetary limitations, I started making gifts for friends that were elegant AND useful. Being an advocate of sustainable living, I am committed to gifting items that express my creativity and are functional. I don’t want my gifts to become another “thing” that clutters homes, or worse, landfills. People told me “you should sell these” and “do you know how much these would sell for?” At the time I would graciously accept the compliment but the comments got tucked away in my subconscious.

As a recently retired business coach, I was aware of the costs of starting a business in both startup capital and time and energy. Although I remember taking the steps to developing the business, I am not entirely sure how I got here. I don’t remember the turning point—my memory loss attributable to the strains of starting a business and maintaining the level of domestic goddessness that my family has grown accustomed to.

So, with the support and sometimes part-time help of my 10-year-old son Owen, my husband Jim, and a little-but-don’t-let-the-size-lull-you-into-a-false-sense-of-capacity-for-voice-projection Elliot, Gone Home was lovingly launched.
